How does applying work?

Getting covered means completing an application, going through underwriting, and waiting for approval. The path depends on the type of underwriting involved.

1. Application

You provide personal details, medical history, lifestyle information (such as smoking), the coverage amount you want, and your beneficiaries.

2. Underwriting

This is where the insurer assesses risk and sets your premium. There are two main routes:

Traditional (fully underwritten)

A detailed application, often a medical exam with blood and urine tests, and a review that can take several weeks. Healthier applicants are placed in better risk classes and pay less.

Simplified

A shorter set of health questions, no medical exam, and often a decision within hours or days. Coverage amounts can be lower and premiums a bit higher, in exchange for speed and accessibility.

3. Approval

With traditional underwriting you receive an offer and premium based on your risk class. With simplified issue, if you qualify you receive coverage quickly, sometimes with limits in the early years.

4. Payment and coverage

You pay the first premium, coverage begins, and you keep it active with ongoing payments.

If you're healthy, traditional underwriting can mean more coverage for less. If you want speed or prefer to skip a medical, simplified issue may suit you better. As your advisor, I help match the route to your situation.
